To the Press

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an international fellowship of people who have found a way out of active addiction. We meet every week to share experience, strength, and hope. Through the fellowship of NA, we help each other live drug-free and meaningful lives.

Anyone who wants to stop using drugs can become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to people who use a particular substance. Anyone who feels they may have problems with drugs—legal or illegal, including alcohol—is welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the disease of addiction, not on any specific substance.

ECCNA 41 in Stavanger in 2026

In July 2026, more than a thousand people in recovery from across Europe and around the world will gather in Stavanger for Narcotics Anonymous' European Convention (ECCNA41)—a large, drug-free event celebrating recovery, fellowship, and joy of life. This is the first time Norway is hosting ECCNA, which has been held annually since 1981.

For the press, the convention is a rare opportunity to meet many people who have achieved recovery and today live good, active lives as productive members of society.

What is Narcotics Anonymous?

  • NA was founded in the United States in 1953 and is now present in 144 countries.
  • The program is based on the Twelve Steps, honesty, fellowship, and mutual support.
  • In Norway, NA has existed since 1988 and now holds more than 220 meetings every week, from Tromsø in the north to Kristiansand in the south.
  • A 2025 membership survey showed that 85% of members had been drug-free for at least one year, and 61% had been drug-free for more than six years.
  • We are happy to share more statistics with interested parties.

We welcome the press

Journalists are warmly welcome to visit ECCNA41 in Stavanger. During the convention, there will be a dedicated press room at IMI Forum, where representatives from the PR team will be available to answer questions and assist with interviews.

We have members of all ages, from across the country and from all walks of life. We are happy to help the press with background information and connect you with members who wish to share their recovery stories.

In keeping with the principle of anonymity—which is a cornerstone of all Twelve Step fellowships—we ask that members' identities are not revealed in text, photos, or video. Anonymity protects both individuals and the fellowship as a whole.
